Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the dooars plain of Jalpaiguri is a small but one of the oldest Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bengal . The name Chapramari probably derives from " Chapramari", ("Chopra"= Kholsa fish, type of small fish, "Mari" an area where fish are abundant). Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for megaherbivores such as elephant, gaur. Alongwith these Cheetal, Sambar, barking deer, wild bore, pangolin are also present in the sanctuary. A rich source of avifauna is also present in Sanctuary. The Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the bank of Murti river in the Nagrakata Civil Block of Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal . Total area of the sanctuary is 960.31 hector. First reservation were made in 1879 and declared Reserve Forest in 1895, vide notification No.3147-FOR, dated: 02.07.1895, under provision of Indian Forest Act, 1878 (VII of 1878). In 1939, 2129 acre of the forest in the part of Upper Tondu Forest was declared as Chapramari Game Sanctuary, vide notification No.12095-FOR, 24th Nov,1939. Subsequently 2373 acre was notified as Wildlife Sanctuary vide notification numbers - 10694-FOR, dt: 18.11.40 and 8403-FOR, dt: 30.8.1941. In 1976, vide notification no. 5408-FOR, dt: 24.06.1976. The Governor had declared his intention to constitute the said area as a sanctuary u/s 18(i) of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (53 of 1972). Final notification of Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary was made in 1998, vide notification no. 2774-FOR/11B-14/98, Calcutta, the 19th August, 1998 u/s 26(1) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. << Back |
