The Park is devoid of any habitation. There are only 13 villages and 8 Tea gardens in the fringe areas outside the National Park. A substantial population of these villages belong to tribes, mostly Nepalese. The villages are also inhabited by Sherpa, Bhutia, Tibetan, rai and Tamang communities. Totemism is common among the villages, and hence they protect the animals and plants and help in the conservation of nature.
